About
KALAº is a daily record of one year conceived as a single orbit. It is a system-driven, human-scribed archive of visual work, symbols, and text held against the turning Earth.
The Instrument
While we experience life as a linear progression, our units of time—days and years—are defined by rotation. By mapping the year as 365 days across 360°, each entry advances the path by approximately 0.9863°. This site renders that position as KALAº, making our collective place in the loop visible next to the work. These symbols are not decoration, but coordinates—a language used to navigate the abstract terrain of thought, color, and form.
The Artist
Michael Parenteau (b. 1978, Springfield, MA) is an artist and designer based in Portland, OR. His practice is an intersection of formal fine art discipline and a life-long study of language, culture, and meditation.
Having lived across the U.S. and traveled globally, Michael integrates the rhythmic traditions of Sanskrit and breath-work into his creative process. He treats art-making as a form of meditation and a vital transmission of presence. When not recording the orbit, he designs for the future of medicine and health research, treating the project of life as one day, one position, and one mark at a time.
